Our main mission is the hardening of young plants. The step from laboratory plant to greenhouse plant is the most important one in the process of cultivation. At that point the plant leaves the protected environment of the laboratory in order to develop its roots in peat. Gradually, the plant will need to adapt to light, ambient air, temperature, water and nutrients in a greenhouse environment. This dramatic transition requires precision and knowledge in order to ensure the best result.

News – To peat or not to peat?
At Denis-Plants, we have made the choice:
NOT TO PEAT!
An explicit choice for sustainability, but without compromising our high quality standards.
Peat is a widely used ingredient in many crop substrates. It improves water holding capacity, buffers acidity and binds fertilisers so that they are available to the plant even when fertilisers are not applied. Indispensable it seems. And yet in recent years, especially from Britain, there has been a movement to grow ‘peat-free’. Peat is a natural product that is easy to mine, but the downside is that it takes centuries (!) for a few millimetres of peat to grow again. Moreover, peatland forms a gigantic buffer of CO2. If this CO2 enters our atmosphere, the consequences are incalculable. So the call to stop peat use is the only right one with a view to a sustainable future.
At Denis-Plants, we have therefore explicitly chosen to take the lead in this conversion.
However, this sounds easier said than done because, after all, peat has been an indispensable ingredient in our nursery for decades of years. So we certainly didn’t rush into this. To be able to continue to guarantee our quality, we tested and adjusted extensively over a long period of time.
In 2025, we will finally be able to switch to peat-free substrate with our perennials. Only for Hakonechloa, as well as for our indoor plants, we will make an exception for the time being. These crops are currently still being tested in order to switch 100% to peat-free.
Together we work towards a sustainable planet.
The future is bright, the future is peat-free.
